Beauty Contests are Harmful

Beauty contests are harmful to the young women who enter the competitions. There can only be one winner and the rest of the contestants are left feeling unworthy, ugly and unintelligent. Beauty competitions claim that they boost the confidence of its contestants, but how can the losers feel more confident when they know that they lost to someone who was more beautiful and had a better personality than they did? Contestants also strive to be someone who they are not in order to win, which can not be healthy. Why should we teach girls that they need to be pretty and well-spoken in order to succeed? We should be encouraging natural beauty and self confidence in less superficial ways. All girls deserve to feel beautiful and they should not be judged on their features and personality by people who do not even know them. In addition, there are no real benefits of beauty pageants, in fact beauty pageants cause more harm than good. According to a study by Johns Hopkins, more than half of beauty contestants since 1970 have had a body mass index (BMI) below 18.5 meaning they are in the undernourished category. The healthy BMI category is between 20 and 25 as defined by the World Health Organization. Girls should not feel as though they are more beautiful when they are underweight and obviously unhealthy. Beauty contests do not boost confidence and cause girls to go to unhealthy extremes in order to become something they are not.

really if beauty contests can be so mentally and emotionally damaging then just dont get into them. either that of just get over the fact that you lost. why should someone care if another is more beautiful than them.

I agree with Colten. Girls have the choice of entering these contests, and they should be able to accept the fact that they are not the prettiest girl in the world... evn though i do agree with the fact that these contests are harmful and leave girls feeling ugly and un intelligant, those kinds of girls should not enter into pagents.
