Bertran Cates
In this screen play, one of the main characters is Bertan Cates. Bert was a science teacher that one day decided to teach chapter 17 in his given text book. This was unlawful because chapter 17 discussed Darwin and his theory on evolution. And during this play, it is illegal to give teachings in public schools about non religious beliefs. He did this in attempt to protect his right of freedom of speech. So now he is going to court in what is suppose to be the Scopes Trial. This trial is bigger than any court case, it is AN EVENT. People come from all around the USA to see this, venues are opening up as if it were a huge Baseball game and so on. This reeks havoc putting the entire town in interrogation of where they stand in this controversial phenomenon.

This is a good, thorough description of the first section of the novel. It does a good job depicting Bert as a character and how the town, as well as the people inside it, are strongly benefiting from this trial. This post also does a consise and accurate summarization of the novel. I also like how you describe the whole court case as bigger than just a trial it is a new wave of change that is brought into the little town of Hillsboro.
Zack you really went into depth on cates. the info you gave helped you underestand were he was coming from. I like that you gave good details and that you were able to depict that character. i thougth that you nailed the fact that he just was teaching what is boss told him to teach. Keep up with the bloges.
I like this post, it goes into the character of Cates, aswell as a good description of the first scene. (While maintaining formal breifness!) It is quite infair to be punished for being told what to do by a higher power - but luck and fate seem to work in a strange way. The fact that you point out that the court case is more than just a case against scopes is substantial. You point out that this is a battle of angels and demons,(Depending on whos side you were on, nauturally!) so to speak. Keep up the good work man!
i really like this post. what i would like to say about it has already been said by the 3 other people that commented on this. so jones is probably going to give me a bad grade for this. but it really agree with this response to the chapter. you had a very thorough response. good job
